Is there anything as simultaneously regal and goofy as a llama? Chubby, social, and often irritable, they never fail to make me laugh! Let’s start 2018 off right with some sweet, simple fun.

Lovely Lola the Llama is my first pattern of 2018. A relatively quick project good for a laugh. I hope she helps you start your new year off right!

Some notes before we get started!

Materials:

• Small amounts of worsted weight yarn of your choice (I used Caron Simply Soft) in
  • White
  • Dark Brown
  • Black (for facial details)
  • Yellow
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Blue
• Small amount of bulky weight hairy yarn (I used Buttercream Angel Hair) in white
• US F/3.75mm crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Fiberfill for stuffing

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Size: Approximately 5.5 inches tall and 5.5 inches from nose to tail.

Pattern Notes: Unless otherwise specified, this pattern is worked using the amigurumi method. Rows are worked in a continuous spiral. No need to slip stitch at the end of a row and chain one before beginning the next one. To keep track of where I’m at in the pattern, I use a brightly colored paperclip as a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row. The amigurumi technique is very forgiving in terms of gauge! I tend to be a tight crocheter, so I usually start with a larger hook than patterns call for. If you have a loose or standard gauge, you may need to size down your hook to get nice, tight amigurumi stitches!

Construction: Head is worked first, followed by neck, ears, body, legs and tail. Blanket is made separately.

Abbreviations (US terms):

• ch: chain
• slst: slip stitch
• sc: single crochet
• dc: double crochet
• inc: single crochet increase (2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch)
• dec: single crochet decrease (crochet 2 crochet stitches together)
• st: stitch(es)
• [number]: indicates number of stitches in each round or row

Pattern

 

Head

With white worsted weight yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: sc in each st around [6]

Round 3: (inc, sc in next st) around [9]

Round 4: sc in each st around [9]

Round 5: (inc, sc in next 2 st) around [12]

Round 6: sc in each st around [12]

Round 7: (inc, sc in next 3 st) around [15]

Round 8: sc in each st around [15]

Finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing. With black yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider facial details using the photo as a guide. I used a “Y” shape for the nose and “V” shapes for the eyes. Stuff head.

Neck

With white bulky weight hairy yarn (starting at top of head)

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: inc in each st around [12]

Rounds 3-4: sc in each st around [12]

Round 5: (inc, sc in next 3 st) around [15]

Rounds 6-9 (4 rows): sc in each st around [15]

Round 10: (inc, sc in next 4 st) around [18]

Rounds 11-12: sc in each st around [18]

Round 13 (partial row): sc in next 9 st, leave remaining sts unworked [9]

Round 14: ch 1, turn, sc in next 9 st [9]

Finish off, stuff neck and leave long tail for sewing neck to body.

Ears (make 2)

With worsted weight white yarn

Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]

Rounds 2-3: sc in each st around [4]

Finish off. Do not stuff, leaving a long tail for sewing ear to neck.

Body

With bulky weight hairy yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: inc in each st around [12]

Round 3: (inc, sc in next st) around [18]

Round 4: (inc, sc in next 2 st) around [24]

Rounds 5-6: sc in each st around [24]

Round 7: (inc, sc in next 3 st) around [30]

Rounds 8-9: sc in each st around [30]

Round 10: (inc, sc in next 4 st) around [36]

Rounds 11-13 (3 rows): sc in each st around [36]

Round 14: (dec, sc in next 4 st) around [30]

Rounds 15-16: sc in each st around [30]

Round 17: (dec, sc in next 3 st) around [24]

Round 18: (dec, sc in next 2 st) around [18]

Begin stuffing body. Continue stuffing as you go.

Round 19: (dec, sc in next st) around [12]

Round 20: dec around [6]

Finish off. Sew hole closed and weave in ends.

Legs (make 4)

With dark brown worsted weight yarn

Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring [6]

Round 2: inc in each st around [12]

Change to white worsted weight yarn

Rounds 3-5 (3 rows): sc in each st around [12]

Change to white bulky weight hairy yarn

Rounds 6-7: sc in each st around [12]

Round 8 (partial row): ch 1, turn, sc in next 6 st, leave remaining sts unworked [6]

Finish off. Stuff leg and leave a long tail for sewing leg to body.

Tail

With white bulky weight hairy yarn

Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring [4]

Round 2: (inc, sc in next st) twice [6]

Round 3: sc in each st around [6]

Round 4: (dec, sc in next st) twice [4]

Finish off. Do not stuff. Leave a long tail for sewing tail to body.

Blanket

With yellow worsted weight yarn, ch 26

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across [25]

Rows 2-9 (8 rows): ch 1, turn, sc in each st across [25]

Finish off. Measure out 8 inch lengths of yarn to weave through blanket to make it colorful. I used 4 lengths of blue, 3 lengths of pink and 3 lengths of green. With a tapestry needle and a length of yarn, weave around each st, making sure to alternate the weaving pattern from row to row. To make tassels, cut 20, 4 inch long lengths of yellow yarn. On sides of blanket, fold one yarn lengths in half, insert hook in the end of each row and pull up the folded loop. Pull loose woven yarn tail and folded ends through loop created and pull tight to secure. Trim tassel ends to desired length. Repeat at ends of each row and on opposite side of blanket.

Belly Strap

With yellow worsted weight yarn, ch 28

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch to end (25)

Finish off, sew belly strap to underside of blanket.

 

Making Up:

Sew head to neck between rounds 3 and 7. Sew ears to top of neck between rounds 1 and 2, making sure that ears point forward. Sew neck to body between rounds 3 and 10 with longer partial row in front. Sew legs to body with longer partial rows facing out. Sew tail high on rear. Slip blanket onto back with belly strap between front and back legs. You’ve done it! Isn’t your Lola so lovely!
